From the '70s to Natural Stone

This master bath in a mid '70s built house was poorly laid out from the beginning. It was basically split into two rooms: a dressing area, and bathroom, separated by a wall and door. This made for a nicely sized dressing area, but a cramped bathroom. With our design help, the homeowner opted to gut the entire area and start from scratch. Because of the layout, it takes several photographs to show the bath before the remodel.

This was the original dressing area with vanity, looking through to the bathroom.

The homeowner wanted an open bath with vanity and dressing area as the walk-in closet is off the current dressing area — the walls (and the hollywood light bars) had to go.

The original shower was a 36" square enclosure that was "just too small", according to the homeowner. A larger shower with seat was and a new window was now in the plans.

Without a window, the bathroom was dark and closed in feeling. This is all about to change.

The house has another large bath with a tub, and the tub in the master was seldom used, so it was eliminated.

With the first wall down, things are already starting to feel larger. Next to go is the tub and shower.

The bath room half of this makeover has been gutted, the dressing area goes next.

With both areas gutted, the new bath framing begins.

And with drywall in place, it is really starting to look like a room again.

The new shower is a full foot wider in both directions. An angled entry was used which left a nice corner for a shower seat. Below, a window is added to the shower.

The outside wall of the shower area -- The new window from the outside -- And from the shower.

The cabinets are in, the shower has been cement boarded, and we are ready to begin tiling.

First to get its new slate tile is the shower floor.

Next, the decorative listello, a mosaic made entirely of natural stone is set around the entire room. The listello is trimmed by 1/2 inch slate below and topped with 1 inch slate above.

With the listello and trim in place, we begin tiling the shower.

We were unable to locate production shower shelves that pleased the homeowner, so we hand crafted the two beauties out of slate.

With the slate floor in place, the tile around the commode and cabinets can get underway.

Stay tuned! This remodel is still in progress... The final makeover photos will posted here soon.
